Exploring a River

Earlier this week, Dara visited our school to present a workshop on rivers. Dara told us lots about the living things which inhabit rivers, river food chains, and the dangers posed to our rivers by pollution. We also explored the water cycle. Dara brought in lots of living samples from rivers and, in groups, we were tasked with finding and naming the variety of creatures and insects. We found creatures such as a mayfly and caddisfly which Dara said indicated very good water quality. Darragh also introduced us to lots of different fish which inhabit our waterways and we were delighted to view a salmon and trout in Dara’s mobile aquarium. We also explored the life cycle of a salmon. This was a really interesting workshop and, maybe, we’ll continue our work on rivers by exploring a river near our home.
