Lots of Literacy

Work in literacy keeps us busy in the senior classroom. Recently, we have read extracts from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. We have also read lots of factual pieces and historical fiction based on WW2. After examining a picture based on the Holocaust, we were tasked with completing a free writing piece. This task resulted in many fine samples of writing in a variety of genres, including report, recount, narrative, writing to socialise (diary, letter), explanation and discussion. While reading the extract from Harry Potter, we worked on various comprehension strategies, including visualisation and we drew and ‘coloured’ some lovely pieces of artwork showing Ron’s Dad’s car flying in the air! In writing, we focused on procedural writing and we wrote procedures for many different tasks with the procedure for how to organise a game of football being particularly interesting.
