In My Shoes – Campaign
Recently, we participated in “In My Shoes”, ie. an appeal to ship used, but in good condition, trainers & sports shoes from families in Sligo to kids in townships in Cape Town, South Africa where life is tough with over 4 million children living in poverty. The Gary Kirsten Foundation in South Africa works at introducing sports to the schools in the townships as an outlet for township children. All children in South Africa have a constitutional right to basic education and though many children attend school, many of them are barefoot. We were delighted to lend our support to this campaign and so we collected runners and sports shoes which we no longer needed and these were forwarded to the Gary Kirsten Foundation which distributed them to school kids in the Khayelitsha Township in South Africa. Some of us included notes in our shoes, with the notes telling a little about ourselves and what sport we had engaged in while wearing the shoes.
