Length – Maths

We have recently been working on “Length” in Maths. We discussed the most suitable unit for measuring various objects, eg. centimetres for measuring the length of our Maths book, metres for measuring the length of the hallway and kilometres for measuring distances travelled. After estimating the length and width of various objects, eg. whiteboard, window, door, table, classroom, hallway, office, kitchen, cloakroom, playground, etc., we then measured them using a ruler, metre stick or trundle wheel. We noticed that the more we practised, the more we improved on our estimation skills. It was fun going outside to measure our football pitch and new playground. Using our height chart, we also measured each other’s height. We recorded all of our measurements on worksheets or in our copies. We also measured the distances between cities as shown in our atlas while on the Internet we researched the distance between various towns in Ireland and also the distance between Irish cities and other cities throughout the world. We really enjoy Maths lessons which involve group work and hands-on activities.
