In 2020, we were enjoying the ‘Something Fishy’ programme but due to COVID-19 and school closures, we never got the chance to go on our planned river fieldtrip. Happily, we were given the opportunity to complete the programme this year. First of all, we revisited the ‘Something Fishy’ website where we learned about the life cycle of the salmon and also about the threats posed by pollution of our waterways and seas. Then, Markus visited our school to talk to us some more about the salmon and pollution. He also introduced us to the different trout species. We completed the programme by visiting Easkey River for our much-awaited fieldtrip. There, we learned about, and viewed samples of the different living things which inhabit our rivers. We also learned about water quality and the role played by macro-invertebrates or small aquatic animals, such as insect larva, snails, worms, beetles, etc. which can be found in abundance in unpolluted waterways. This was a really interesting programme and as we live in a coastal area and in a rural area, where there’s lots of rivers and streams, it is important to know about the living things which live in our waterways.
