2D Shapes & Angles
In 5th and 6th Class, we have been exploring 2D Shapes. We looked at lots of 2D Shapes (ie. square, rectangle, circle, semi-circle, triangle, rhombus, parallelogram, hexagon, octagon, pentagon, etc.) and we discussed their properties, eg. number and type of lines and angles, etc. We investigated equilateral, isosceles, scalene, right-angled and obtuse-angled triangles. By drawing a triangle and then cutting off its top, we made a trapezium. We also explored the properties of quadrilaterals. Using a maximum of 4 equilateral triangles, we created a rhombus, a parallelogram, an equilateral triangle and a trapezium. We used pattern blocks and paper templates to explore tessellation and we discovered that pentagons and octagons need other shapes to tessellate with them. We completed various challenging activities using tangrams, pentominoes and geoboards. To show symmetry, we drew the other half of various shapes and we also cut out shapes and folded them. Using geostrips, we added struts to strengthen shapes thereby creating triangles. We then explored angles and using a protractor we measured and drew lots of different angles. After completing angles we moved onto the circle. We learned the names of the different parts of the circle, ie. circumference, diameter, radius, chord and sector and it was fun going outdoors and drawing our own large circles.
